A Wedding Photographer’s Philosophy: Capturing Your Story, Not Just Photos

Photography That Serves You

As a wedding photographer in Gloucestershire, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my approach to capturing weddings. What’s my role? What should my couples expect? The conclusion I’ve come to is simple: my job is to serve you and tell your story.

Yes, I have a photography style—one that blends documentary wedding photography with relaxed, natural portraits. And that’s likely one of the reasons couples hire me. But more than anything, I see wedding photography as a partnership.

I don’t believe in turning your wedding day into a never-ending photoshoot. Instead, I want you to spend time with the people who truly matter to you. My role is to capture those interactions—the laughter, the quiet moments, the joy—as they happen naturally.

Striking the Right Balance

Of course, posed photos have their place. I’ll guide you when needed, offering direction to make sure you look your best while keeping the experience comfortable and fun. But I also know that the best moments often happen when no one is looking at the camera.

At the same time, I recognize that every couple is different. If you want to take some extra time on portraits to ensure you’re happy with them, or if there’s a perfect sunset or a special moment unfolding that’s worth capturing, then let’s absolutely do it! My main point is that I won’t force you into a long portrait session unless that’s what you want.

The Importance of Family Photos

One thing I always recommend is taking a few group photos with close family. I say this from personal experience—when my wife and I got married, we didn’t ensure our photographer captured these shots, and unfortunately, we now regret it. My wife’s mum has since passed away, and we never got a photo with her on our wedding day. That’s something that still saddens us.

That said, this is a partnership. If you genuinely don’t want formal group shots, I’ll listen to that. On the other hand, if you want to spend extra time making sure you have every combination of family and friends in group photos, then that’s also great!

A Relaxed, Unobtrusive Approach

Many couples worry about feeling awkward in front of the camera. My approach is designed to put you at ease. I keep things relaxed, friendly, and natural. I want you to enjoy your wedding, not feel like you’re constantly “on set.”

Ultimately, my role is to serve my clients and what they need. Of course, I have my own style and opinions, and I’ll offer guidance when needed. But this is your wedding day, not mine. I’ll never let my preferences or ego take priority over what matters most to you.
